At these talks, the UK's leading voices will be sharing their stories about how they built their food businesses, and some of the valuable lessons they learned along the way.
For this Q&A, we will be learning from 'Aldi's Next Big Thing' winners Mike Williams, founder of Flake Bake, and Christian Barrington, founder of Mud Foods:
Flake Bake was inspired by Mike's co founder and dad, Paul Williams, a Jamaican immigrant who honed his baking skills working in his uncle’s bakery in the UK during the late 90s. After the bakery closed down, in 2008 Paul decided to recreate the business himself. Flake Bake's mission was to specialise solely on the manufacturing and supply of Jamaican patties. Mike orchestrated a remarkable transformation, propelling Flake Bake into becoming South London’s largest supplier of handmade Jamaican patties.
Mud Foods started with Christian’s journey into pie-making , which was inspired by cherished family memories, particularly his grandmother’s signature steak and kidney pie. He wanted to recreate the wholesome, hearty pies from his childhood so took a leap to start his own organic café. As demand for his pies grew, Christian decided to close the café and focus solely on Mud. In 2009, he invested in a small industrial unit in Chichester, which allowed him to increase production and sell to the masses.
You can see both brands successfully take part in and win 'Aldi's Next Big Thing' where they have now secured listings across the UK.
